Neurology is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders affecting the nervous system. This includes the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles. Neurologists are medical specialists who treat a wide range of conditions such as epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, migraines, neuropathies, and neuromuscular disorders.
Three fundamental neurophysiological tests form the cornerstone of neurological evaluation: Electroencephalography (EEG), which records the brain's electrical activity to identify abnormalities such as seizures, sleep disorders, and encephalopathies; Electromyography (EMG), which evaluates the electrical activity of muscles to detect neuromuscular diseases, nerve compression, and muscle disorders; and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) studies, which measure the speed and strength of electrical signals traveling through peripheral nerves to diagnose conditions like neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and nerve damage.
